Review: Aukey 10W Wireless Fast Charger

Wireless charging has been around for quite a while but it hasn’t really been used by me. Back in 2008 the Qi charging standard was introduced and it was hit and miss when manufacturers did include the feature in their handsets (and still is) but thanks to Apple including the feature in the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X it is safe to say that we can expect to see it improve and be available in more and more handsets in the future. In order to charge wirelessly you’ll need a charging pad which is where the Aukey 10W Wireless Fast Charger comes into play.

Aukey did send me the unit to review but they haven’t had any influence on the review. The first time they will be able see the review is here on the website.

Unboxing

Like most things these days it is a simple affair when it comes to unboxing. Opening the box will reveal the paperwork as well as the pad itself, with the cable neatly wrapped up and tucked away under the cardboard shelf.

Overview

Here it’s a pretty simple design with a material top and a metal bottom meaning that it feels solid and it doesn’t slide around. Up top you’ll find a lip where the fixed flat USB cable goes into the unit. It is also quite a slim unit means that it will sit under a monitor with your device on top with plenty of room to play with.

Usage

When it comes to using the unit, it is ridiculously simple. Plug in the USB connector into power supply. A 2.4amp output is recommend line your phone up with the coil and it’ll charge straight away. The small lighting bolt at the top of the front will come on too. A few things to point out here are to use to fast charging (quick charging) you’ll need to plug the device into a quick charge plug. This will give the full 10w or if you use a 2.4amp plug you’ll be receiving 5w of power. However if you device doesn’t support fast charging over wireless it’ll just charge at the maximum of what your device supports.

In my case I have been using this with my Samsung Galaxy S8 and an Apple 2.4amp plug that I found lying around. I don’t care for the fast charging as I only use wireless charging to give my phone a little top up during the day or to charge overnight. I did however try it with it with my quick charge plug that came with my S8 and it started fast charging over wireless.

Conclusion

The Aukey 10W Wireless Fast Charger is a very nicely designed charger (one of the best designed on the market) and does exactly what it says. The inclusion of fast charging is a great improvement over the standard Qi charging speeds. Whilst it can be a bit fiddly at first to get the two paired up correctly, once you have done it a few times it becomes muscle memory.  The white lighting bolt is also an after thought that hasn’t been executed very well since you can’t see it once your phone is on the pad. Overall it’s not a bad price either for a pad this slim.
