Archos Sense 55s Hands-On: Bezel-less For The Masses – IFA 2017

When you think of Archos phones, you likely don’t think of high-end, or particularly innovative, exciting devices, most of the time, you’d be right, but today at IFA, we got hands on with the Sense 55s from Archos, a phone that has a tri-bezelless design and won’t break the bank.

We don’t have exhaustive specifications just yet, but we do know that it comes with a 5.5″ 1080p IPS display, and from the looks of it, it’s a high-quality one as well. Archos even seem to have laminated it to the screen for better viewing angles and just a better viewing experience, which is always nice.

We also know it’ll come with a Quad-Core Cortex A53 chip from  MediaTek, the MTK6737T. It runs at 1.5Ghz and has 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 16gb of eMMC storage, but there is a MicroSD card slot. Archos have also slipped in a 3000mAh lithium Polymer battery and a nice touch is the USB-C port with 5v2a faster charging compared to most lower end phones and the 5v1a.

Lastly the phone is equipped with 2 rear cameras, a trend at the moment, they are both 8mp and they are Sony IMX219 sensors. Archos wouldn’t tell me what was special about these cameras, and by that I meant is one monochrome and the other RGB? or is one super wide angle like on the LG phones? or Telephone like OnePlus and Apple? they would tell me nothing sadly.

We don’t have a retail price or availability date just yet, but trust me when I say that this is without a doubt the best phone Archos have ever made. It’s incredibly slim at 8mm and light at 130g. Sure it’s made of plastic, but the selling point on the 55s ss the screen (that’s what I’m assuming the ‘S’ stands for, Archos won’t tell me) and it is an absolute stunner. So much so that I’m probably going back to have another look tomorrow.
