iPhone 11 Series, iPad 7th Gen & Apple Watch Series 5 Announced – Apple Event 2019

iPhone season is once again upon us and as usual Apple’s September event brings with it a whole host of new iPhones alongside other updates and information but surprisingly no ‘One Last Thing’ as is customary. So what were the main products announced at the Apple Event 2019?

The leaks came in left, right and centre before this event as is usual before any Apple Event so a lot of this information may be old news for you guys but let’s have a look at what was announced!

Apple ArcadeApple Arcade: The first thing on the agenda which ‘is the only place you can get access to over 100 exclusive games … which can’t be found on any other platform or subscription service’. The App Store will be gaining a new Arcade tab which is replacing the Updates tab. It will be available on September 19th with developers like Konami and Cartoon Network being part of the service. The cost for this service will be only $4.99 for the entire family with a 1-month free trial included as standard to try it out.

Apple TV+: “Dickinson” and “SEE” will be part of the new digital TV service Apple announced earlier this year. “For All Mankind”, “Hala”, “Snoopy in Space” and “Ghost Writer” are just a few items from content available on Apple TV+ which will be debuting on the 1st of November 2019 for just $4.99 a month for the family subscription. Any purchase of a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac will also give you a free year of AppleTV+.

iPad: iPadOS was quickly reintroduced by Tim Cook explaining the difference between it and its foundation operating system, iOS. The 9.7” iPad got a refresh with its 7th generation and introduced with a larger 10.2” Retina Display, an A10 Fusion chip and the smart connector. The enclosure on the 7th generation iPad is also 100% recycled aluminium with a starting price of $329.

Apple Watch: We were initially introduced to some real-life stories of when the Apple Watch helped people including improving their health and fitness, preventing a heart attack by recognising the irregular heartbeat and even saving an unborn child’s life when her mother’s heart beat became excessive.

With the help of the Apple Watch, Apple has previously run a heart study at a huge scale with over 400,00 participants stemming from Apple Watch users which has helped to build upon the accuracy of the atrial fibrillation detection built-in. The success of this study has resulted in Apple launching 3 new studies including the Apple Hearing Study, the Apple Menstrual Cycle Study and the Apple Heart & Movement Study which will all be used at a national level with world-class research and development centres to try and help progression.

Apple Watch 5 Series

Apple Watch Series 5 was brought to the stage introducing features such as an always-on Retina display which will be in a lower brightness mode until you raise to wake to ensure it meets the ‘all-day battery life’ Apple claims. It is made out of a new display technology called LTPO with a variable refresh rate. The Apple Watch now also has a compass built into it. All cellular Apple watches will now have international emergency calling built into them.

The aluminium watches will be crafted out of 100% recycled metal whilst a pair of new Titanium Apple Watches housings will be available in brushed silver and a brushed space black colourway. The pricing remains the same as prior years with a $399 price tag for the GPS models and $499 for the Cellular models.

iPhone: The 2018 iPhone trio gained a combined satisfaction experience of 99% which is the highest in the industry. The iPhone XR was also the most popular iPhone of the last year which is likely due to the lower price point with lots of the higher end features from the XS and XS Max being available in the colour chassis’.

The iPhone 11, the replacement for the iPhone XR, comes in 6 colours including purple, white, Product Red, black, yellow and green. There is a new dual-camera setup with 12MP standard and ultra-wide lenses which is a new addition on the iPhone line-up. A new ultrawide interface in the camera app allows for an indication of what can be achieved with the wider lens. A new night mode is available which automatically activates in darker situations which seems similar to the effect seen on Googles Pixel line-up with Night Sight.

You can also now quickly take short videos within the photo mode by holding down the shutter button to capture those cherished moments. The front true depth sensor is now 12MP which is automatically activated when taking landscape selfies with slow-motion video also being available on the standard 7MP lens. The XR’s successor now boasts an hours extra battery compared to the aforementioned which is primarily down to a more efficient processor in the case of the A13 Bionic. The starting price of the iPhone 11 will be £729 for the 64GB model going up to 256GB of storage for £879.

Slofies

The A13 Bionic is Apples 2019 flagship SOC and Apple is touting it as the ‘fastest CPU ever in a smartphone’ alongside being the ‘fastest GPU ever in a smartphone’. It has 8.5 billion transistors, with improved machine learning and a third-generation neural engine. The machine learning accelerators can process operations 6 times faster than the A12 Bionic meaning a total of 1 trillion operations are capable on the CPU per second.

The premium iPhone’s are branded as the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max as many of the rumours guessed correctly. The back of the Pro iPhones is now in a frosted matt finish compared to the glossy natural glass finishes of iPhones past. Midnight Green, Space Grey, Silver and Gold are the 4 colours available in the 2019 Pro models and the green definitely seems interesting.  The technology which grants the Apple Pro Display XDR its XDR moniker is also present on the iPhone with a new name of Super Retina XDR.

One of the big highlight features of the iPhone 11 Pro’s is the enhanced battery life, whether that is due to a capacity increase or pure processor improvements is yet to be seen. The iPhone 11 Pro has an estimated 4-hour increase in battery life whilst the 11 Pro Max sees a 5-hour upgrade.

The Pro models also get an extra lens on the rear with a new 12MP Ultra Wide mimicking the upgrade which was received on the iPhone 11. A pair of 12MP lenses in the Wide Angle and Telephoto variant are also present on the rear. These 3 lenses are identical on both models and are enclosed in a square camera bump which seems about 2x the size of the current one found on the XS and XS Max.

The iPhone is in a unique position with over 30,000 camera applications available on the Apple App Store with Apps such as Filmic Pro taking advantage of the incredible processing processor allowing you to record using multiple cameras at once.

Apple has also developed a feature called Deep Fusion which takes a total of 9 shots to combine into a single finished photo. 4 are taken before the shutter is pressed with a long exposure taken throughout the entirety and 34shots taken after the shutter is pressed.

Apple Event 2019

The pricing for the iPhone 11 Pro starts from £1049 for the 64GB model up to £1399 for the 512GB model. The 11 Pro Max starts at £1149 for the 64GB up to £1499 for the 512GB model. These are the priciest iPhones to date due to the value of the pound falling so low in comparison to the dollar due to our favourite buzzword Brexit. The phones will be available starting September 20th with pre-orders starting Friday 13th which is somewhat unfortunate.

One bonus thing that was finally introduced at the Apple Event 2019 was an 18W Fast Charger included inside the box for both of the Pro Models, but the Lightning port is still prevalent in the majority of the line-up.

At this year’s event, the improvements were largely minor and to be honest there hasn’t been a radical change in 3 years since the iPhone X launched in 2017. With many already suggesting a major deviation from the norm at the 2020 event, will that iPhone finally be the huge change some of the fan base is expecting, with features like ProMotion and USB Type-C?
